In Brief

Hyundai seem to have fast tracked this small SUV based on the popular ICE vehicle version. It incorporates many of the features that’s made the ICE version so popular. The interior has clean lines and a fairly standard easy to use dash with the addition of a heads up display. The small 39.2kWh battery version will get over 300kms on a charge and this is largely due to the incredible efficiency of the vehicle just like Hyundai’s other EV, the Ioniq. The longer range 64kWh model should provide close to 500kms plus range depending on the style of driving. As a small SUV the rear seats may be a little cramped for taller adults and the luggage space in the back at 332ltrs is limited, however the rear seats do fold extending the space to 543ltrs. The Kona comes with autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot detection and rear cross traffic alert. It has DC fast charging as standard. At a price range around $59,990 and $64,450 (Elite or Highlander) it is more expensive than the 2018 LEAF and perhaps the base model Tesla Model 3 (when it arrives!). The vehicle comes with a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty, a high voltage battery warranty for 8 years or 200,000 kms. The Kona EV is now on sale in Australia with the first car delivered in April 2019.
