Autolib is an EV car rental system first set up in Paris in 2011. It now has 45,000 active subscribers making between 9,000 and 13,000 car journeys every day. The French tycoon behind the business, Vincent Bollore, now has plans to introduce it to London and also to the US city of Indianapolis. “We’ll have Blue Cars in London within the next 12 months,” Bollore said.
Anyone over 18 with a valid drivers license can subscribe to the scheme on a daily, weekly or annual basis. Vehicles can be taken from any rental station and dropped at any other rental station. Charging is time based with a 20 minute minimum charge.
“We’re going to see more charging points popping up across London, which will drive the take-up of these cleaner, greener machines and help to reduce air pollution too.” commented London’s Lord Mayor Boris Johnson. Charge points will be expanded from the current 1400 to 6000 by 2018.
